THE VICE RECTORATE FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS PUBLISHES THE THIRD ISSUE OF GLOBAL UMH

The Vice Rectorate for International Relations at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) has published the third issue of Global UMH magazine. This periodical reports on notable international activity going on at the UMH in both paper and digital versions, and is available free of charge from any device here. Global UMH is published in English and Spanish and serves as a letter of presentation for the UMH.

This issue coincides with the 20th anniversary of the UMH and the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus program. Its opening story talks about the beginnings of the Office of International Relations, and how both it and mobility from the Erasmus+ program have evolved since then. Other stories cover the Capacities 4 Climate Change project (C4CC) to raise awareness about climate change, the inauguration of the Nemba lunchroom in Rwanda, an initiative of solidarity by two engineering students who crossed parts of the Sahara Desert in an early model automobile, in addition to the exhibition by photojournalist José Pedro Martínez that the UMH hosted, which has been extended and will be displayed at the upcoming fourth Ryszard Kapuscinski International Seminar.

UMH ACQUIRES A TORDESILLAS DOCTORAL COLLEGE

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), which last year joined the Tordesillas Group network of academic cooperation (comprised of academic entities from Brazil, Portugal, and Spain), has gained approval by the Coordination Committee of said entity for the Tordesillas Doctoral College (TDC) of Public Health and History of Science. Participating in this new doctoral college, coordinated by the UMH, will be the universities of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Porto (Portugal), and it has been endowed with 18,000 € for a period of two years.

The Tordesillas Group has the mission of advancing, through the founding of these colleges, academic and scientific collaboration between research groups or departments of the institutions that are network members, as well as facilitating student and faculty mobility. The creation of this TDC will undoubtedly increase the mobility and internationalization of our doctoral program, parameters that are lately gaining influence in national regulation and accreditation of graduate education.

THREE NEW PROGRAMS ADDED TO THE UMH STUDY ABROAD OFFER

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche has added three new programs to its Study Abroad package, two specializing in communications engineering (Electronics for Satellite Communications and Wireless Sensor Networks) and one on regional food and the knowhow behind it (Mediterranean Diet and Landscapes). They provide specific training to international students while they integrate themselves into our Mediterranean surroundings.

These new courses expand the learning possibilities by UMH Study Abroad, which also includes the Mediterranean Cultural Studies program, and offers university students and instructors a wide range of possibilities for advancing their knowledge within the province of Alicante over various weeks. These three specific courses were recently presented at international events, including NAFSA and EAIE, in addition to during successive visits by the International Relations team to American universities. The programs in UMH Study Abroad are part of the initiatives to promote the internationalization and projection of the university.

UMH PARTICIPATES IN A PROJECT TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Students and graduates from the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) are participating in the Erasmus+ project Travel Transformation, whose objective is to improve communication capabilities on raising awareness about climate change and sustainability. The project participants included young people from various fields of knowledge from six countries, including Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Greece, Germany, and Spain.

During the final two weeks of August, the group stayed in the small town of Karnitz, Germany, a locale that offers a summer school every year that addresses sustainability and shows how to publicize it. For this, the participants took part in different workshops on spots, animation, online TV, radio, painting, and transmedia. Each workshop concluded with at least one product focused on raising awareness about climate change.

These products will be made available on a web platform, and the participants will attend a second meeting in Chile in January 2018. The UMH also participated in a project about raising awareness on climate change last year under the alias of C4CC: Capacities for Climate Change. The current activity is part of Erasmus+ KA2.
