Prosperity, the Chair of Sustainable Development Cooperation, launches a virtual escape room to learn about the SDGs

Prosperity, the Chair of Sustainable Development Cooperation, was created via agreement by the Executive Board at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) on February 26, 2020. This chair has now launched a virtual escape room to learn interesting facts about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Escape room participants confront challenges and enigmas and obtain information and advice on how to contribute to sustainability in everyday life. Participants also learn how to include the action plan from the United Nations 2030 Agenda into initiatives that they undertake on professional levels in the future.

The escape room game consists of five challenges, one for each of the Ps that categorize the SDGs: People, Planet, Prosperity, Partnership, and Peace. Each participant chooses an original alias and uses it to open the lock from each challenge as an identified user.

If escape room players encounter difficulties, they can receive clues to solve each enigma that take an estimated 5 minutes. Furthermore, each participant can consult their score on a scoreboard and compare theirs with those of others who have completed the challenge.

People who solve the five challenges receive virtual accreditation that proclaims their commitment with the 2030 Agenda. Players who solve the enigma are entered into a raffle to win 17 sustainable Fair Trade products.

This game will remain open May 14 – 23, and players may complete the challenges at different moments throughout this period on their computer, table, or mobile phone.

This activity is part of the actions contemplated in the collaboration agreement signed on November 2, 2019 by the Generalitat Valenciana, through its Ministry of Participation, Transparency, Cooperation and Democratic Quality, and the UMH, to co-fund Prosperity, the Chair of Sustainable Development Cooperation.

SDGs and the 2030 Agenda

The 2030 Agenda is a comprehensive, multidimensional agreement — it addresses the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development — and of universal application as signed by the Member States of the United Nations. This action plan requires the commitment and active participation of government, the private sector, and civil society, and revolves around the five Ps upon which the 17 SDGs are categorized.

The SDGs consist of a set of concise, global, action-oriented goals that seek to protect the planet, eradicate poverty, and achieve peace and prosperity for all.
