Red Cross distributes prepaid cards to 34 families affected by the October 2024 torrential rain and flash flooding thanks to 45,100 euros donated by UMH
30 June 2026
The rector of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), Juan José Ruiz, along with the Vice Rector for Internationalization and Cooperation, Vicente Micol, met with the provincial president of the Alicante Red Cross, Francisco Galvañ, and the regional delegate for universities, Jesús Rodríguez Marín, to learn about the initiatives carried out by the Red Cross with the 45,100 euros donated by the UMH. With these funds, the organization delivered prepaid cards to 34 families affected by the torrential rain and flash flooding to help cover basic needs—such as food and medication—as they recover from the October 2024 storm.
Other individuals present at the meeting included Vice Rector for Planning and Social Responsibility, Domingo Orozco; the provincial coordinator of the Alicante Red Cross, Carolina Espadas; and the head of the Red Cross Response Plan for the torrential rain and flash flooding in Valencia, Rosa Sebastià.
In response to the October 2024 natural disaster, the UMH raised 65,100 euros, which it donated to institutions, NGOs, and organizations that worked in coordination with public authorities and emergency services to provide shelter, water, food, medicine, and assistance to the affected population. Of the total amount raised, 32,550 euros came directly from payroll donations given by UMH employees.
