A Delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Dominican Republic Visits the UMH
27 October 2026
The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Dominican Republic (MESCyT) as part of the 7th Ministerial and High-Level Authorities Meeting on Science, Technology, and Innovation. The UMH Rector, Juan José Ruiz Martínez, and the Vice Rector for Internationalization and Cooperation, Vicente Micol Molina, participated in this meeting.
The Dominican delegation was led by Minister Rafael Santos and included the Deputy Minister of International Relations, Paula Disla; the Deputy Minister of Administration and Finance, Otto Vargas; and the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Genaro Rodríguez.
The minister and his delegation met with a group of Dominican students who, thanks to MESCyT scholarships, are currently pursuing master’s degrees at the UMH. The reception provided an opportunity to learn firsthand about the students’ academic experiences, exchange views on their stays in Spain, and strengthen ties of university cooperation between the two countries. During the 2026–2027 academic year, the UMH is hosting a total of 38 Dominican students on MESCyT scholarships, bringing the total number of Dominican students who have pursued master’s degrees at the UMH over the past six academic years to 186.
During its stay, the Dominican delegation also visited the facilities of PLD Space, an aerospace company that emerged from the entrepreneurial ecosystem linked to the UMH and has become a leader in the European space sector. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the university’s potential in entrepreneurship, knowledge transfer, and the creation of technology-based companies (spin-offs and start-ups), as well as to present a success story of a business initiative that began at the UMH.
