On June 15, Spanish Radio and Television Corporation program, ‘The Adventure of Knowing,’ broadcast a story on the ‘Surgery Campaign XVIII in Turkana.’ UMH associate professor of microbiology, Kika Colom, is a campaign participant through her university development cooperation project, “Improving the Health of the Turkana Population through the Prevention of and Treatment for Neglected Tropical Diseases.” This project is part of a 2020 agreement, established between the UMH and co-funded by the Ministry of Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation, and Cooperation at the Generalitat Valenciana.

The 18^th edition of the Surgery Campaign in Turkana recently finished, during which it attended nearly a thousand patients in North Kenya. Furthermore, this health cooperation project is also benefitting teaching and research. In addition to training local professionals on specialties such as radiology and microbiology, a pilot study was completed on malaria, another on bacterial resistance, and another on mycetoma, one of the afflictions included on the WHO list of neglected tropical diseases.
