Story on “Surgery Campaign XVIII in Turkana,” with participation by associate professor Kika Colom from UMH
On June 15, Spanish Radio and Television Corporation program, ‘The Adventure of Knowing,’ broadcast a story on the ‘Surgery Campaign XVIII in Turkana.’ UMH associate professor of microbiology, Kika Colom, is a campaign participant through her university development cooperation project, “Improving the Health of the Turkana Population through the Prevention of and Treatment for Neglected Tropical Diseases.” This project is part of a 2020 agreement, established between the UMH and co-funded by the Ministry of Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation, and Cooperation at the Generalitat Valenciana.
The 18th edition of the Surgery Campaign in Turkana recently finished, during which it attended nearly a thousand patients in North Kenya. Furthermore, this health cooperation project is also benefitting teaching and research. In addition to training local professionals on specialties such as radiology and microbiology, a pilot study was completed on malaria, another on bacterial resistance, and another on mycetoma, one of the afflictions included on the WHO list of neglected tropical diseases.
