Basic Training on Volunteering Edition 6 at the UMH
2 April 2026
The Service of International Relations and Cooperation at the UMH held the sixth edition of the Basic Training in Volunteering online on March 25, 26, and 27. This event combined both theoretical and practical components in collaboration with the organizations, Jovesólides and Medicus Mundi Mediterrània.
At this event, which was open to the general public and attended by more than thirty people, Jessica Collado, a representative of Jovesólides, opened the theoretical portion on March 25. She focused on the concept of volunteering and its requirements, as well as the limits of volunteer work. This session also analyzed aspects such as the rights and duties of both volunteers and the recipient of such volunteer efforts.
During the session on March 26, Alejandro Pérez, also from Jovesólides, discussed volunteer organizations, outlining the different types of volunteer work and their main characteristics, and providing an overview of ways to get involved. His presentation also included a section on social engagement and university-based volunteering, led by Laura Parrilla from the Service of International Relations and Cooperation. She highlighted the initiatives promoted by the UMH to encourage university community participation in solidarity actions.
On March 27, a practical session was delivered by Medicus Mundi Mediterrània. It began with a participatory activity designed to reflect on expectations surrounding international volunteering. Elena del Cacho, coordinator of the Sahara Project at Medicus Mundi, then shared insights from more than 30 years of volunteering in Western Sahara refugee camps. Meanwhile, Marina Hidalgo, also from Medicus Mundi, outlined the key elements of effective volunteering.
These workshops are co-funded by the Regional Ministry of Social Services, Family, and Children of the Valencian Regional Government. They aim to promote responsible social engagement by providing practical tools and experiences that prepare participants for mindful and respectful volunteering.
