The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) ranks among the world’s top 300 universities in Public Health in the 2026 edition of the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The UMH has improved its ranking compared to the previous edition and now sits in the 201–300 range globally, making it the sixth-highest-ranked Spanish university in this academic subject.

The UMH also ranks among the top 20 Spanish universities in the four academic subjects in which it is ranked. Along with Public Health, the Elche institution sits in the 301–400 range globally in Agricultural Sciences and Food Science & Technology, academic subjects in which it ranks 15th and 18th in Spain, respectively. The UMH also remains in the 401–500 range globally in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where it ranks 13th within Spain.

These results strengthen the UMH international presence in fields closely linked to some of its key scientific strengths, particularly health sciences, pharmaceutical research, and the agri-food sector. The ranking achieved in Public Health is particularly noteworthy, both for its global standing and for the progress achieved in this edition.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects analyzes the research performance of universities around the world in 57 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. This ranking focuses on research activity rather than the quality of teaching.

To compile its ranking, ShanghaiRanking uses objective indicators related to the presence of internationally renowned researchers, the publication of papers in highly prestigious journals, scientific output in first-quartile journals, the normalized impact of publications, and international collaboration.

The UMH inclusion in four subject areas in this ranking and its standing among Spanish universities reflect the quality, impact, and international reach of the research conducted by its research groups and institutes.
