Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and UMH strengthen links by adding two new doctoral programs to their collaboration agreements

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) continues enhancing its academic cooperation with the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) through the collaboration of university faculty members in Dominican doctoral programs. Both universities have announced the incorporation of two new programs to those already offered by the UASD. Faculty from the Doctoral Program in Public Health, Medical and Surgical Sciences at the UMH will participate in the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences at the UASD, and Elche faculty from the Department of Art will assist in the Caribbean university’s Doctoral Program in Artistic Creation and Research.

The announcement was made public on March 11, during a meeting in which both universities assessed the outcomes from previous agreements for the doctoral programs in The Environment and Sustainability and that of Agricultural, Agro-Environmental and Food Resources and Technologies. Attendants at the meeting included the Dominican Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT), Franklin García Fermín; and numerous academic authorities from UASD, including its Vice Rector for Research and Graduate Education, Mauro Canario. Those present on behalf of the UMH included Vice Rector for International Relations, Vicente Micol; Ibero-America Espejo Program Director, Joaquín Pastor; and Director of the Virtual Learning Agreement-Nanocourses, Fernando Borrás.

Vice Rector Mauro Canario described the structure of these new doctorates and the boost that their rollout will mean for the UASD. He also highlighted the importance that they provide its faculty to have a graduate program updated and in line with international standards, as well as for the National Registry System of PhD’s from the UASD, which currently numbers more than 300 members. Vice Rector Vicente Micol expressed his satisfaction with the close collaboration between both academic institutions (UASD and UMH) over the past four years, and he underscored the importance that the growing number of doctorates will have on teaching quality, scientific productivity, and the internationalization of an academic institution, as well as for societal progress.

For his part, Minister Franklin García mentioned that the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, as a public institution of higher education, makes up half of the Dominican educational system at that level, and he committed to funding doctorates in Health Sciences and Artistic Creation and Research at the UASD as well as increasing the National Fund for Innovation and Scientific & Technological Development by some 65%, making it reach a billion Dominican Pesos in 2024 (almost 16.5 million euros).

The UMH delegation also attended an event held on March 9 at the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Relations. There, an announcement was made to provide two thousand international grants by the National Grant System at the MESCyT to complete master’s training at foreign universities; among these is the UMH, which is opting for one hundred grants for Dominican students and professionals to receive master’s training at the UMH. While in the Dominican Republic, the UMH delegation also took advantage and held meetings from other academic institutions from that Caribbean country.
